They don't die unless you pull them out very fast, hook deep and hold out of the water for too long esp in summer. I always keep the net in the water and unhook. Lately been using barbless hooks for fast release.

if you never fished before, go on the bike ride on the weekend to explore different spots, you will also learn a lot from different fishermen just watching them fish. west tribs can be harsh environment for new anglers

start from basics. what size is your hook and your line? any leaders?

run the mono/fluoro leader at least 2 ft. not only it gives you little stretch, it's easier to notice damage from teeth before loosing a spoon.

you can go in the park and drag the line through the grass, but if the spool is too full you will get same results. after a number of casts the line will be twisted again.... move to braid..

was driving there in the evening few years back and saw one guy fishing, out of curiosity stopped to see what he was catching.... to my surprise he was getting crappie right under the light near the dam. he said there were tons of bass in the pond north of mill pond.
